For over 40 years now, we have had the privilege to be a part of God's kingdom movement here at the Chapel. As we look ahead to the "Next 40" years that Jesus has for us, we look back to Acts 1:8 when He said:
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
We believe Jesus is calling us to be His witnesses and journey with Him toward four different ministry initiatives in this next season of church life. Three of these initiatives correlate to the regions where Jesus called His first disciples, as well as a fourth initiative that involves each person who calls the Chapel their church home.
- Jerusalem: Worship Buddies
- Judea & Samaria: Eastside Church
- The end of the earth: Thailand
- You – Our collective call to be Christ's witnesses wherever we are

"...you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem..." (Acts 1:8)
Jesus wanted His disciples to begin His mission right where they were; the place where they were already working, living, and experiencing God. Our "Jerusalem" for the Next 40 Campaign is our Worship Buddies ministry.
Why Worship Buddies?
God created everyone in His own image, and we want to more fully embrace worshipping together with people of all abilities. Worship Buddies is a Sunday morning ministry that breaks down barriers for children with special needs allowing them to participate in Children’s Ministry alongside their peers. We do so by pairing each child with their own “buddy”. Our buddies are trained to know and meet each child’s needs to make worship accessible for children of all abilities. This ministry allows parents freedom to attend adult worship and build community while confident that their child’s needs are being met. We feel called to expand this ministry to welcome more individuals with special needs of all ages and to extend beyond Sunday mornings.
Facts about Worship Buddies:
- Worship Buddies has been serving special needs children and their families for over seven years now.
- What started as a small extension of our Children's Ministry has now grown to a point where we are serving 25 families (30 children and 12 Student Ministry students) at the Chapel.
- Average number on Sunday morning: Children-18, Students-7
- Many special needs programs in Williamsburg have long waiting lists, so the need for more partnership is great.
We want Worship Buddies to be a ministry that is served with and by our brothers and sisters of all abilities, not just for them. This impactful ministry has outgrown our current Sunday morning realities, so we need to add space and staff to support and expand our ability to worship together with people of all abilities.
Estimated Cost: 24% of Next 40 Campaign budget ($366,000)
"When there are barriers to God's image-bearers, we are limiting the full expression of God in our community."
- Rich Sylvester, Lead Associate Pastor

"...and in all Judea and Samaria,..." (Acts 1:8)
Jesus called His disciples to take His message to regions that were geographically close, and both culturally similar (Judea) and different (Samaria).
Why a Church Plant?
Even before a church plant was on our "ministry radar," Doug and Karen Bunn felt called to move to the eastern part of Williamsburg; now we know why. God has clearly been moving in the hearts of our leadership to continue to expand His kingdom by "triangulating Williamsburg" with the gospel of Jesus Christ. While our campus on John Tyler Highway is a wonderful gift that the Lord has given us, our physical location can limit us from saturating Williamsburg with the gospel. As we step into the “Next 40 years” of what Jesus wants to do in our midst, our first step in “triangulating Williamsburg” is to plant a church on the east side.
Facts about Eastside Church:
- On October 10, 2018, the church plant was officially named Eastside Church.
- We felt led to plant a church within walking distance for the red shaded triangle in this area.
- On January 13, 2019, Eastside Church held its first Sunday morning service at the George Washington Inn.
- The property we are currently targeting for Eastside Church is located at 473 Merrimac Trail.
The existing property is in need of renovation in order to become a more ideal physical space for spiritual formation. We are still working with York County to gain the initial approvals before renovation can begin. The renovations include meeting space for Sunday morning worship, classrooms for children, a kitchen, bathrooms, and an administrative space. We will also have staffing and programming needs in addition to these changes to the physical space.
Estimated Cost: 49% of Next 40 Campaign budget ($750,000)
"With Jesus leading us, over the next five years, through a great multiplication of spiritual generations, we will saturate the east side of Williamsburg with the gospel."
— Doug Bunn, Eastside Church Lead Pastor

"...and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
Jesus commissioned His disciples to expand God's kingdom to areas that were geographically distant and culturally diverse. Our “end of the earth” involves deepening our partnership with ICM and its work in the country of Thailand.
God has guided our church to form a partnership through International Cooperating Ministries (ICM) and its work in Thailand. From where we sit in Williamsburg, Thailand is at the "end of the earth," and we are excited to see how God will use this partnership to establish and equip schools, train leaders, build churches, and combat the evils of the human trafficking industry that plague the country of Thailand.
Facts about Thailand:
- The population is 94% Buddhist and only .5% evangelical Christian.
- Thailand is ranked as a Tier 2 country in human trafficking by the U.S. State Department.
- ICM and its partners are providing homes for orphans, schools, and bringing children to Christ.
We want to impact lives in the Thailand communities by:
- Helping to prevent human trafficking through education, schools, homes, and churches and providing a safe place and an education for kids.
- Equipping the nationals to do the work of the ministry.
- Planting a minimum of 10+ churches where there are no churches.
As we shine the light of the truth of the gospel in Thailand, we expect that God will bring healing, redemption, and hope to a people who have experienced great pain, suffering, and fear. We will greatly depend upon God's grace and provision as we follow His leading and serve as His witnesses on the other side of the globe.
Estimated Cost: 20% of Next 40 Campaign budget ($300,000)
"We'd love to see Thailand go from .5% evangelical Christian to 5% in the next 20 years."

4th Initiative: You!
There is a fourth initiative as part of our Next 40 Campaign: you! We believe that the gospel movement Jesus longs to see in our community is “bottom up” and not “top down.” We are asking everyone who calls the Chapel their church home to consider what fourth initiative Jesus is asking them to pursue as a part of His gospel movement. The monetary portion of the Next 40 Campaign allotted to the fourth initiative will be used to inform and inspire our community as we go on this journey together.
To help inform and inspire our community regarding what Jesus is doing through the fourth initiative, we want to hear your story of where God is calling you in this “Next 40 season” of our church’s life. To share your “Next 40” story, contact Hunter Ruch at .
Estimated Cost: 7% of Next 40 Campaign budget ($108,000)
"The Next 40 Campaign is not simply three great initiatives the Chapel will pursue. The Next 40 Campaign is three great initiatives that will model the outward movement of the gospel Jesus longs to see in every disciple. In Jesus, God made the first move toward us. There’s no such thing as an immobile disciple, because there’s no such thing as an immobile God."
- Travis Simone, Lead Pastor
Ways to Partner
We are asking everyone who calls the Chapel their church home to consider partnering with us on our “Next 40” journey. It's our conviction that we embark on this journey Everyone Together. We value both your spiritual partnership (through prayer) as well as your financial partnership (through giving). To partner and pray for our Next 40 Campaign, text next40prayer to 41411. Prayer is essential as we move forward in this next season of our church's life.
Alongside prayer, we welcome your financial partnership. As always, our first responsibility in giving is to the Chapel's General Fund. Your Faith Promise contribution is intended to be over and above your regular giving.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
